Introduction

Your band is well established with its new swanky logo, a van load of merch as is ready to hit the road for a number of breakthrough gigs. (The drummer has had to be replaced, due to an unfortunate after show party where he accidentally threw himself out of the hotel window instead of the TV.)

- 2 single covers (7")

Inspiration

I have looked through some of my preferred artists on Spotify - such as Munn, Colby Brock, Clinton Kane, Nico Collins, and others - to find inspiration for the single album covers. I also went to a local HMV store to seek inspiration for album covers that were within the genres of Metal and Rock. I also went to Warwick Bazaar in order to look for more physical (3D) inspiration, however I didn't find much therefore I will keep looking for more physical inspiration.

Warwick Bazaar

Whilst walking around the Warwick Bazaar shop I've found out that a lot of artwork that is showcased upstairs is actually from various people, some including small business owners, and others include students. ' The Hanged Man: Chapter 1' is one of available items to buy and it is also one of many creations which belong to Oscar Roberts, who is currently studying Illustration (second year) at University of Cumbria, which I thought was really amazing as I really admire the work he produces in University.

Ideas

When we were first told about this modules brief, an instant idea of physical abbreviation of the band name popped into my head. I also thought about collaborating with two of my friends, Neil Herries and Joshua Greenwood, in order to organise a photoshoot which I would like to include rose petals as well as roses, fake blood, and tweezers (possibly a knife?) to create an atmosphere that will match the theme of the band. I also want to create a pair of earrings with the bands logo which I would love to include in the photoshoot. The photoshoot would then allow me to experiment with the images by creating variety of collages as well as using different medias such as thread, paints, markers, fire etc.

Wood work

I went to the workshop facility and have chosen to work with a thick piece of MDF wood (to be confirmed). The letters 'M' and 'T' have been rather easy as they required straight forward cut which I have made by using a bandsaw machine.

However, I have found the letter 'S' a lot more challenging due to the curves of the letter. I have used a variety of machines such as; pillar drill onto which I have used a forstner bits attachment in order to carve out perfect circles in order to then use an electric wood saw to carve out the inside of the letter.

Then, I have used a bandsaw to get as close to the outline as possible, a sander to sand down the remaining rough edges of the letter. Then I have used sand paper and wood filer in order to get to areas of the letter that I wasn't able to reach whilst using the sander machine.

Further progress

I have focused today on simplifying the logo and preparing a design which would allow me to engrave / score an acrylic sheet by using the laser cutting machine. However, the lines were too thick and I had to go back to the design in order to make the lines thinner.

Once the design was simplified and the lines were thin enough to continue with the process, I have used the laser cuter program to highlight which areas are meant to be cut out and which ones are meant to be scored/engraved, that way the machine had produced two beautiful sets of earrings.

I have used a two acrylic sheets, one in an opaque hot pink and the second was just plain clear sheet of acrylic. I'm really glad I decided to use two different sheets of acrylic as this has allowed me to experiment with how engraving behaves on different coloured acrylic.

Personally, I prefer the clear set of earrings more, simply because of how easily the set could've been worn with any attire, of the minimalistic aesthetic, and how they can elevate the entire outfit instead of overpowering and overwhelming it with the strong colour.

Photoshoot preparations

Right from the start I knew that I wanted to collaborate with other students from different courses in order to create a photoshoot - the only issue being is figuring out the album name, and song names, in order to match the album theme. I thought for a while about different album names but one name in particular kept haunting me. After a while I decided that it was some sort of sign, therefore I decided to go with it.

We have decided to run a few test shots in order to ensure ourselves that we are happy with the settings on the camera. The first picture was taken without a flash. Second has a white balance set wrongly. However, the third picture we all really liked due to the contrast between the background and that the most lit area was focusing on the person which gives the overall mysterious atmosphere which I believe ties well with the idea of the band.

Unedited Photos

I really liked those shots and that's why I decided to include them - we had a much varied photoshoot with Josh hence why I decided to include a picture of each shoot that we had with him. I also invited Toby Sydenham, a Wildlife Media student, and Heather Briggs, an Illustration student. Whereas, Neil has asked one of his fellow classmates, Fraser Rollings, to also join out 'band'.

Funny faces during photoshoot

Working with Josh, Neil, Toby, Heather, and Fraser, has been a lot of fun. Josh has absolutely smashed the photoshoot - he was so creative and such a natural model I was honestly beyond impressed. Neil took incredible pictures and he had such a good ideas with the camera composition, and angles, as well as, lightning. Toby, I believe that secretly he was a little embarrassed but he played it off really well, which gave him a persona of 'indifferent drum player' as we called it. Heather has fit the role of a second guitar player really well, she also gave the group a nice dynamic due to the fact that compared to everybody else she was wearing all black. Fraser, however, has been a pleasure to work with. He is so charismatic and funny. He kept making funny faces which has made the atmosphere of the photoshoot much more light-hearted, and before I knew it everyone got inspiration and got into a goofy mood because of him.

Roses and Earrings

I have also created a very small photoshoot consisting of roses, petals, and earrings which I've made. Initially the earring were meant to be worn by one of the band members, however, Josh had just pierced his ears and they hadn't healed properly, and no one else who's portraying a band member has their ears pierced. Therefore I have decided to use those earrings in a mini photoshoot.
